These 2 Bollywood Film Will Make Your Jaw Drop

Nah, i'm exaggerating. But in case you've been clickbaited by the title, then I recommend you to go hunting for these 2 latest Bollywood production:

(i) PK

(ii) Bajrangi Bhaijaan

Both films are sooo fine that it literally Ghandiying me about what lesson all of us film maker could learn from India films, which are:

The colorgasm and identity.
Okay sorry, i'll stop the stupid pun. But you had to agree that the bright color of every on frame in Bollywood films are somewhat a guilty pleasure when you need a break from Hollywood generated color grading, which tends to be hazy and dark at the same time.

Bright color are tricky. It's hard not to leave tacky and plebeian impression when executed by inexperienced film maker. Especially because composing more than 2 bright color on the frame required tremendous amount of art senses. Imagine if you had to work on blank canvas, what'll you draw when you had to use more than 2 bright color? Try Red, Green and Blue. If you're inexperienced in design, then your design will be sorry ass shitpiece. Same thing could be applied to film, where Bollywood tends to excell in composing their frame with bright color. And it actually worked. It resulted to somewhat unique magical India experience that audience can easily related that it specifics to India.

Well, it can't be helped that India are colorful. The clothes are bright red, in contrast to their skin color, in contrast to the bright yellow flower garland, in contrast to blue and green wall, etc. The color war in the film only strengthen the identity of the film. Audience could easily associated that the film is a Bollywood film from the color alone. Well maybe not. The actor, language, and many other aspects too. But I hope you get the point.

The love of religion + addressing real problems = shazzam.
I feel that both PK and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are made by people who are passionate to talk about India's majority religion, which is Hindu and it relationships to the minority. And both of the movie promotes the demand to reach the agreement of the same real problem: dispute between India and Pakistan. Such combination then make an ultimate recipe of an unique movie who can only be produced in India.

Indonesia could learn a lesson or two. First, as a film maker, there are no need to forsaken our religion and beliefs for wild ideas. Film maker is allowed to love their religion. And wild ideas, in India case, are resurfaced thru the simple act of love. Second, we don't need to always adopt Western style to survive. Just like India, we have many potential to develop a film making style which unique only to Indonesia. Religion, real problems, etc. Just open our eyes, look up to the sky and see.
